While the subject of what to eat is HIGHLY subjective, what not to eat/drink is less debatable. Here's a list of what I avoid people to steer clear of to stay healthier and treat the body well:
1) Transfats
Why? The body does not encounter these in nature and does not how to deal with them.
What to be on the lookout for and how to avoid? Don't eat margarine. Don't eat fried foods or anything with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils as ingredients.
2) Artificial Sweeteners
Why? Excitotoxicity. Basically these sweeteners cross the blood-brain barrier, mimic neurotransmitters and make brain cells malfunction, over-exciting their synapses until they die. Did you know that in animal testing, animals administered Aspartame developed holes in their brains?
What to be on the lookout for and how to avoid? Some 'sugar free' products are OK, you have to look at the ingredients. The #1 health and wellness offender is Aspartame (aka Nutrasweet). Avoid it like the plague. Just because Searle Pharmaceuticals has a lot of money and can pay Donald Rumsfeld to push it past the FDA doesn't mean it won't rot you from the inside. Also avoid acesulfame potassium aka acesulfame K. I don't know of any good reason not to consume Sucralose, however I am still somewhat wary of it so I limit how much makes it into my body.
3) All "juice" which is not freshly squeezed.
Why? It is always bound to be nothing but well-dressed (packaged) and marketed SUGAR WATER WITH CHEMICALS TO MAKE IT SMELL AND TASTE LIKE ACTUAL JUICE. The pasteurizing of the product kills all enzymes which aid in digestion and would normally be consumed if you ate the fruit.
What to be on the lookout for and how to avoid? If it has not been freshly squeezed, it is not actually juice. It is only sugared water and probably doesn't belong in your body. End of story.
4) Fluoride Toothpaste...and fluoridated water....and...anything with Fluoride
Why? Fluoride has no place in the human body. It is a heavy metal which is toxic. Additionally, with sound dental hygiene there is no need for it - at all.
What to be on the lookout for and how to avoid? There's already too much in your water. Using tap water to wash out your (hopefully fluoride-free) toothpaste residue is the equivalent of using a fluoride rinse!
Sodium fluoride, a hazardous-waste by-product from the manufacture of aluminum, is a common ingredient in rat and cockroach poisons, anesthetics, hypnotics, psychiatric drugs, military nerve gas, and U.S. drinking water. Your government started putting it in the water around the time that Stalin learned that fluoridating the water in his prison camps made the prisoners more docile, stupid and submissive. Combine that with an opportunity for industrial concerns to earn money on selling a toxic chemical to municipal water companies that they had previously been spending costly sums on disposing of safely and you've got a win-win situation for everyone but you.
Consider..."The plain fact that fluorine is an insidious poison, harmful, toxic and cumulative in its effects, even when ingested in minimal amounts, will remain unchanged no matter how many times it will be repeated in print that fluoridation of the water supply is 'safe'."
